The Guths - owners of La Casa Rara
La Casa Rara is owned by Douglas and Desiree Guth of
New Orleans, Louisiana. Desiree is a nurse who was in the Peace Corps in Honduras during the 1980's while Doug is a school teacher. Doug and Desiree love to scuba dive and
vacation with their extended family and friends.
Construction of La Casa Rara began June of 2005, the
summer before Hurricane Katrina. Doug and Dez
evacuated Katrina and made the promise to finish La Casa Rara before returning to New Orleans. Doug worked
alongside the Honduran crew hauling sand, gravel
and cement up the hill and raising the walls by hand.
Each brick was laid with love and the dream of a
family vacation home to enjoy with our friends, children and
grandchildren.

Great room and kitchen in the main house

Lookout tower
Our house was designed by a local Roatan architect to
perfectly capture the wind and sun direction such that
the house provides maximum comfort. Our Honduran mainland
crew guided us in the use of Honduran materials
and style to stay cool in the tropical heat. There is
no air conditioning or climate control in the main
house; rather, a cool island breeze flows through the house with the
assistance of high ceilings and fans.
The main house
features the spacious master bedroom and bathroom
along with the great room and kitchen, both of which
are centered around the large open-air patio perfect for hosting parties or relaxing in a hammock. Just 100 yards from the main house is the lookout
tower that provides a bedroom with full bath,
kingsize bed, and air conditioning. The walkway from
the tower to the main house through the gardens makes
provides the perfect separation for two families to enjoy the
property. The tower has a third story rooftop terrace
perfect for watching golden sunsets over the blue
Caribbean Sea.
